Those pink things are...

In the recent flooding I saw those pink things around so much and they loooked so unnatural. Here are some of my blog readers (bleaders?) guesses in response to the photo futher down the page (or here).

Bubble Gum!
pink things .. um .. bubble gum?strange growing algae plants from all the wet?
Looks like wads of bubble gum. haha. Maybe some sort of pretty pink mold???
Mould? Bubble gum?...
My guess is that they are 'packing foam' that have been left there after the flood water levels have gone down! :)
Of course it's not bubble gum! Marshmallows. Clearly.

When I asked about it people here told me snails eggs. So I asked Mr Google about pink snails eggs and this is what I found: Snail egg photo, Apple snail eggs close up and some info about the Apple snail.

I'm seeing these pink things everywhere! On plants, walls etc. This is the view from our back door. Its the drain and the fence- but what are those pink things? Serious and silly guesses welcome.

Hmmm... a cauldon for making love potions (the agreed method for moving along someone who doesn't agree to their arranged marriage). And yes, I have been reading Harry Potter this afternoon.

A pot for lighting a fire in when there's a blackout so commuters on the road can see.

An old pot that the government has seconded to use as a road sign (I see something spray painted on it...)I'm out of guesses.

It looks to us like it's made of rubber--old bike tires and such. Craig thinks it might be an oversized chamber pot.

Either a garbage bin to keep the vermin out or a snake chalmers pot to keep his pet in.

I also think it's a dunny (like Craig) but perhaps it's made out of an old bomb or something from war times??

And the winner is..... Claude- yes it is a rubbish bin! Usually when we put the rubbish out to be collected we just use plastic bags and leave them on the side of the road to be collected. Thats handy for people who want to look through your rubbish to find something to eat or sell. Its also handy for rats who are looking for a place to hang out. So this bin, made from old tyres makes the side of the road a much nicer place!

Looks like a marquee of some sort. Is it some markets? If it is, there's not too many people around.

I think the thing on the road is a marquee for a funeral. or maybe a wedding. That's what they had on a road in Thailand.

It is a wedding! People set up marquee in the middle of the road and the traffic just has to cope with it. This is also done for funerals and other gatherings. In these photos you can see the tables and chairs being set up.




When you arrive at the wedding meal you sit at one of these tables. When your table is full they will start bring food. If you don’t have enough people you won’t get served!

I usually go to a wedding thinking it will be a good time to practice my listening and speaking skills (in Khmer language). But usually the music is too loud.

It's so colourful- people wear brightly coloured clothes. And there is often silly string involved.

Girls get really dressed up to go to weddings, they might get their hair done at the hairdresser, paint their nails and wear full make up. I’m talking glitter, false eye lashes and everything!

This morning I was woken up by a wedding, not an unusual occurrence. The music and monk’s chanting is so loud. Where I used to live they kept the noise between 6.30am and 9pm. But in the part of town I live in now the noise can be going all night! I’m just hoping the wedding I can hear today is a one day event, not a three day one!

These days...

The other weekend we went out of town with a group from college. I don't go out of the city much, and whenever I do I see lots of things I've never seen before. Can you guess what we’re doing in this photo?

To get to where we were going we had to cross the river on a ferry. The photo below I ook when we were on it. Our moto was right at the front, I felt like we were about to drive into the river!

Our church building has been flooded the last 5 Sundays, so we have been meeting peoples houses. Last week we had to walk along a rickety narrow bridge to get there- it was a bit scary!

I’m about half way through Level 3 Khmer language classes. I’m finding I have much more writing homework than before. I used to try to hang around outside in the late afternoon for speaking practice. At that time of day people on campus are playing sport, or sitting on the grass talking, so it’s a good time for chatting. But these days writing homework is taking up my time.

As I have already got to know people a bit, spending time speaking with them is a bit more natural now anyway.

Also, I just started going to an evangelistic Bible study. So far its been exciting for me because I’m starting to understand more words, and I’m enjoying trying to talk to people after the meeting.

At the end people share prayer requests. Its quite overwhelming, many people have sick family members, and/or are out of work

I guess the picture is a filter trap for a prawn farm, surrounded by slabs of rock to hold the filter mesh, and with a wacker-packer used for smoothing the hole lying on its side in the middle.

hmm tricky....

there is a steel bar in the background along with some green safety netting. On the right looks like it might be a big power tool. In the foreground are two big lumps of concrete, although the one on the left looks roughly chiseled, so maybe its rock. Perhaps the big powertool is for cutting the rock.

I guess that only leaves one conclusion.... Katherine's making pancakes again!!

No wait... it a building site! :-P
