Over the last few months Kimsoeun has been getting ready for the new school year which starts this month. In the past he has mostly taught subjects about preaching. This year he will teach the book of Romans for the first time, so he has been doing lots of prep for this! Also just found out he will be teaching a subject on evangelism.

Kimsoeun this month...
Kimsoeun has finished his end of year marking. After that he got all his hair cut off and joined the 3rd years on their end of year trip to Rabbit island. Lots of games including a watermelon eating contest.(See photo)
Yesterday he went across the driveway to get his laptop from the office, but he came home with 3 fish instead. The driveway was flooded so he picked up three fish and left them in a bucket outside our house. We put a metal grill thing on top, but the still got away. We don't know how they managed to jump out- we looked for them but they were no where to be found.
At 5pm yesterday he got a call from church. There was no one else to preach so it was his turn again! Only one evening to prepare. He ended up using a talk he did recently when the Bible school graduates got together.
Next thing for him- prepare class for next semester. He is teaching Romans for the first time.

Christmas Holidays
The end of the academic year is here. The Bible school students have exams at the moment so some of them are on campus this weekend to study rather than going to do their usual church work in various provinces.
Some of them made themselves dinner at our house as you can see in these photos. They brought the bbq thing inside and cooked meat and veg to dip in sauces and eat at they cook each piece. They are also watching some big sport thing on TV.
I finished my English groups with a revision day. For the girls at Bible school I made cake, and for the group at church we cooked pancakes together.
The primary school I help at doesn't follow the usual academic year here, but they are having their mid year exams now.

Graduation

Bible School Graduation was held recently. It was great to see old friends who came for the day. I also enjoyed singing. One of the songs we sang is picture below. I went over in my language sessions in the week leading up to graduation so I was able to sing all of the words!

In English we call it "Because he lives".In Khmer its called "God sent his Son". One of the words in it I learnt from an advert on TV for MSG. Ajinomoto MSG claims to "dissolve easily", that word for dissolve/ melt is what happens to fear (in the song).

Recent flood photos

This morning I went for a ride down our road. The duck farmers house is flooded, so they were doing it all on the road. I also saw people using boat type things to get around. I've been posting photos on our other blog Kronicle Extra, also some of the fishing nets that are set up on campus.

I have a friend whose house is really hard to get to, so she and her 3 year old are staying with her mum. But her husband has to stay and look after their ducks. They were joking about how its like they are divorced for rainy season. She's looking fwd to the water going down so she can be married again. Although for the long weekend she is going home, and taking some friends to visit her house. They are excited because they will be catching and eating fish.. fishing from the comfort of your own home!

Flood!
The water levels on campus are about as high as they were at their highest last November. If you click here you can see photos from last year, in each set there is one or two for when it was pretty flooded, and one for when it was really flooded.

Cambodians go cross cultural in the comfort of their own country.
Recently Soeun and a group of Bible school students spent a few days in Preah Vihear province. Visiting this remote location was a cross cultural experience for Soeun- even though he is Khmer.
A church in Preah Vihear province
A lady about 27 years old makes multiple trips on her motorbike each Sunday to pick up kids from all around her village in Preah Vihear province. She takes them to her house, where she lives with her 2 children, the eldest is 11 years old. (Someone younger than me has an 11 year old! They tend to get married young in villages. Her husband is a farmer and often has to live out in the fields so she is home alone with the kids.)
Each week they sing Christian songs and memorize some parts of the Bible. There were only about 5 Bibles for around 20 people. They don’t have a pastor (or a church building), so their meetings are different from what I know as a “church service”.
Even though they don’t have the plans and strategies that a Phnom Penh church might have, they have continued meeting each week for years. Soeun was really struck by this. So much human effort and planning goes into church as we know it. In contrast this church is planned and held together by God, in a way that is more obvious than it might be in a city church.
When Soeun preaches in Phnom Penh, the church members sit and listen. But when he tried to preach in Preah Vihear it was a whole different experience. When they understood something or were excited it was obvious by their body language and comments. So it was obvious to him when they didn’t understand what he was saying as they sat their looking confused. He had to work hard at using language they can understand easily, rather than the sort of language used in a Bible school.
One sermon was on a passage they knew by heart so he got them to recite bits of it though out his talk.
Currently there are two students at the Bible school from Preah Vihear. They are planning to go back when they have finished their study. Soeun is really excited about this, there is so much need for them there. Generally in the Cambodian church leaders and church members with a good Bible knowledge are needed.
When it was time for the team to leave, the children had already gone to school. Soeun was sad the kids couldn’t see them off as they had so much fun together.
Remote, unexpected, different.
Until recently Preah Vihear was ‘cut off’ from the rest of the country as there was no road access. Also it was one of the last strong holds of the Khmer Rouge so it was known as a place of fighting.
Siem reap province is known for Angkor Wat, Kompong Cham is known for rubber trees, Battambang is known for rice and oranges but Soeun doesn’t remember hearing anything special about Preah Vihear province.
It now boasts a World Heritage site- the temple on the border with Thailand. The Bible school team went to visit; there are photos elsewhere on my blogs.
Before the team headed up there they made a program of events. They knew they would probably need to be flexible as they didn’t know what to expect. This was true- even more than they thought. Lots of surprises.
Some of the things Soeun wasn’t expecting included the fact that there were schools and markets and the crime rate seemed to be less than in other parts of Cambodia. We don’t know any official stats on this, but from the way people live it seems to be the case. Parents were happy for groups of girls to walk home in the dark, and it must be really dark as there is no electricity (apart from people’s generators which they turn on at certain times). Surrounded by thick jungle too. There didn’t seem to be gangs there as there are in other places.
One of the boys got a nail in his foot. When this happened Soeun was surprised to find the community didn’t seem to have access to medical care.
Lots of jungle and dust, like in R’kiri we visited at Christmas.
That’s just some of the things that Soeun told me within the first few hours of getting back to Phnom Penh, plus the fact that the team had brought back a boy. Buts that’s a story for another day… maybe an email rather than a blog.

Chilly December evening around the fire
After dinner tonight the students made a fire and cooked some sweet potatoes. Soeun and I joined them, singing Christian songs and silly songs and playing games. It was nice to have a warm fire cos it is quite cool at this time of year.Wednesday, November 19, 2008
Water Log: Some highlights
For the last week and a half we feel like we have been living on an island! Our area of the city has had flooding since late August, but the recently the water became so high that classes at Bible school had to be called off.
This amount of flooding hasn't happened in previous years. It seems its not just due to lots of rain, rather brought on by city planning activities. I have a collection of news articles and letters to the editor you can read by clicking here.
I have been logging about it daily on my water log, but here are some of the main events.
Some of our neighbours and most students aren't living here at the moment. Most of the buildings are higher than the water, including our house. We're very glad about that knowing that there's all sorts of germs in the smelly water. It used to be brown, its turning green now.
On Sunday 9th Nov, the water was higher than I had ever seen before, so I ran around taking heaps of photos (Day 82). But the next day it was even higher so I took even more photos! (Day 83, part 1 and 2). That week was a holiday week anyway, so most people were away. We had stocked up on food as we planned to stay home during Water Festival when the city gets really crowded.
We felt like we were living by a lake. We enjoyed some relaxing brunches as we watched the sparkling waters of Lake Car Park.
One day I ventured off the island and took some photos you can see by clicking here. That day I saw a boat on our street, and water being pumped into a nearby street (I thought the side of roads was for drains to drain away the water??)
As soon as we saw a dry patch of ground we took a photo which you can see here. That was last Wednesday, and the water has been going down since. Rainy season is over and cool season is here. It has been very chilly, one morning it was down to 23 deg.C! Where are my socks!
It has rained since then, but I think it must be cool season rain rather than rainy season rain, as the water is still going down each day.
We have had students over for meals, and seen some sunsets over Lake Soccer Field as you can see here.
We have been walking with fish and watching trees die and fall over as their roots become too water logged. (Photo here)
And this week we are watching the water level fall, each day we go and look to see how the shore line has moved. (Photos here)
Its reminded me of when I was in quarantine during SARS (China, 03), not being able to come and go freely, being isolated. When I was stuck home alone then I emailed people heaps (some of you may remember getting emails from me every few minutes!) This time I blogged on my Kronicle Extra.

The unusual flooding continues
For the last 86 days our area of Phnom Penh has been flooded. It hasn't flooded like this in previous years, this is something unusual probably due to city planning activities. You can see above a families shop/home is flooded, and below you can see some truck inner tubes people use to float around on.I have been keeping a journal of life on "Island Bible school" click here to view: Water Log, and all the related posts on this blog can be found here: Big tropical rain

From flooded to more flooded
The photo above I took last week. Normally people can just walk on the volley ball court and the path ways to get to the red steps to go into the building. But as it was flooded last week they had to walk along the edge of the grass, then step onto some cement tiles stacked up in the water, then on to the steps. You can see from the photo below this week it is even more flooded!Monday, November 10, 2008
High high higher
Yesterday was day 82, and the water was higher than I have ever seen it, so I posted 3 photos on my other blog click here: Day 82 never been this high
But when we woke up today the water was even higher! I posted some photos to compare, some from last week mixed with yesterdays and todays, ones taken of the same thing side by side so you can watch the water rise.
Click here: Day 83 photos part 1, and Day 83 photos part 2
Apart from the headache I've got from being on the computer for too long, its been kind of fun , splashing around. There are heaps less people on campus too as this is a holiday week. We're enjoying our island holiday!
Oh, and I forgot to say yesterday was Cambodia's Independence day, I watched the parade on TV last night, it was really interesting, I'll tell you about it one day. Rachael was there, have a look! 55years!

Here are some photos from the Bible school graduation that was held today. If you read my previous blog post about the slippery mud, you can imagine what it was like for everyone to get to the school today. In one of these photos you can see some guys pushing a tuk tuk through the flooded road. I took it this morning while people were arriving. Since then it has rained some more. I heard some stories about cars and trucks getting stuck. You can also see a photo of one of the students preparing the take away lunch of rice, meat and egg we all ate today.

Lost homework of Khmer student
The power often goes off, and yesterday it went off when one of the Bible School students was writing an essay on the computer in the library. So Soeun spent the evening trying to recover it , but with no luck.
The students here usually write their homework by hand, but this particular piece had to be typed. Not many students know much about computers so it must be quite a challenge for some.
I don't think any of them would have their own computer, but many do have flash drives, and there are a few computers in the library they can use. This particular student had borrowed some one's flash drive to use in the library. Soeun checked both the flash and the computer but there was nothing saved. I think the school computers wipe anything new when they are shut down- which it terrible for people when the power goes off , or if they don't know how to save it on to a flash or have a flash to use.

Sound System
While the students are on their long summer break, Teacher Soeun has lots of different jobs to do. Planning lessons, translating a book and helping set up the new sound system in the school hall.
And there has been lots of moving going on. Our neighbours moved out, and new ones moved in. Likewise with Soeun's office mates. We felt like we were on the ark one night. Our old neighbours had moved out and the new ones hadn't moved in yet. Our other neighbours had gone to stay at a friends place- the flood was almost in their house, I think they packed up all their furniture in case the stinky water came inside. So as we looked out the front door after dinner there were no signs of people, just lots of water.
The water has gone down heaps now. I'm pretty sure there are less mozzies around than when we had a similar thing happen last year. I think because there was more water, enough for fish to swim.
